Anecdotes: This state was named 'Roodt Eylandt' or 'Red Island' by Dutch explorer Adrian Block, because of the red clay that lined the shore. When the state came under British rule it became known as Rhode Island. The state is home to the oldest tavern in the USA, the White Horse Tavern which was founded in 1673.
